This week, as I’m pulling together all my research and creating new resources to support entrepreneurs in a deeper way through intentional business design coaching, I’ve been reflecting on my own journey as a business owner. Next month marks 8 years in business. 🎉 In many ways, with the rebrand and new services, I feel like I’m starting over again, but this time not from scratch.
As an entrepreneur with ADHD, my brain is wired to ALWAYS be looking ahead at the next thing. Even now, HEARTWIRED CO.™ as a new brand is just getting off the ground, and I’m thinking about Kindred Oaks, my 5-10 year plan.
Here’s the thing, though – daydreaming about what’s next without making space for it now would be sending the wrong signal. As new opportunities and side-quests come up every day, my question to myself is always: does this fit into what I’m doing? Does it fit where I’m going? And if it’s still really enticing: what do I need to let go of, streamline, or hand off to make room for it?
I’m going to get really deep right now and tell you – I don’t believe we only have ONE purpose or calling in life. I think I’ve probably lived my calling a couple of dozen times by now, and I hope I live long enough to do it 10, 20, or 30 more times. There’s not just one thing that lights me up – it’s connection, it’s mental health, it’s business technology, problem-solving, decision-making, the art of communication. It feels like it’s all coming together in new ways every year.
This multi-passionate part of me is honestly why I care so much about the operational side of your business. Not because spreadsheets and dashboards are exciting, but because when the foundation is solid, you can say “yes” when it is time for the next right thing. You can pivot when you’re called. You can move on without guilt or leaving a huge mess behind.
Time – capacity – is our greatest gift and the thing that gives us the most power. Keeping it in check allows us to answer when the next dream calls.
So, what does it look like to build a business that supports you this way? How do you know if your business is HEARTWIRED™?
A HEARTWIRED™ business feels GOOD to run from the inside. Here is what that looks like:
- You start your workday already knowing what to work on, instead of staring at your screen trying to figure out where to begin.
- You can close your laptop at a normal hour and actually enjoy your evening, instead of feeling like there’s always one more thing.
- You can take a real vacation. Not a working vacation. An actual one.
- When something new catches your interest – a class, a new offer, a different direction – you have room to explore it instead of watching it pass by.
- Your technology supports you instead of tripping you up. The tools you use work for the way you think, not against it.
- The work you’re doing matches your energy throughout the day. Creative or strategic work when you’re sharp, simple tasks when you’re not.
- Your new clients know what to expect from day one, and so do you.
- You are not just surviving the week. There is actual forward momentum.
If something on that list stood out to you, that’s worth paying attention to. Reach out and tell me which one landed hardest for you.
It’s not about perfection, but if you focus on these things, I can attest that you’ll love running your business more and more every year.
